House-call vet visits: what to expect (and what they're not for)
SFL Pet Visits · 2026-11-02 · General information only — not veterinary advice.
A house-call vet brings the exam room to you: history, physical exam, vaccinations, blood draws, and many routine treatments happen on your floor, where your pet is calmer and the vet can see real behavior and environment. Visits usually run longer than clinic appointments, and pricing commonly includes a house-call or travel fee on top of services — published on the practice's website or quoted before the visit.
What house calls are not for: emergencies. Difficulty breathing, collapse, severe bleeding, suspected poisoning, urinary blockage in a male cat, or major trauma belongs at an emergency animal hospital immediately, not on a house-call schedule. Keep your nearest emergency hospital's number saved regardless of who does your routine care.
